The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Spin Options Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
