The search for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

Spoiler Warning: The following reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the significance of the encounter was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
