The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle during the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated a committee representative.

Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Symbols

The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to showcase the city's proud history of championing inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
  • Organizers are committed to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our part of the country,” organizers concluded.
