The Chainsaw Man Film Tops the U.S. Box Office in Opening Weekend
Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? In the wake of the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in more than $600 million worldwide, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million threshold worldwide, reaching a worldwide gross of $108M during its debut. This movie surpassed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Impressive Domestic and Global Performance
Helmed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in $18.2 million in the U.S. after a powerful $5.2M Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Globally, the MAPPA-produced feature grossed nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million under Sony (over $43 million abroad, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.
Benchmarks to Previous Anime Hits
Specialist agency an industry expert had earlier commented, contrasting the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and debuted with a similar $18M in the U.S.. This movie's debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross presently stands just behind the earlier film's $166.6M final run. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a major victory for the studio.
Marketing Strategies Fuel Performance
The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to propel their dominance at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc advertising push launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a major presence at NYCC showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. There was even an special preview for fans for general audiences and popular figures too after the last day of the convention.
Future Prospects
2025 stands as a major time for Japanese animation, and for Sony, which has an additional animated movie debuting in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
