Rare Crimson Lightning Photographed in the Heavens

A group of photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have successfully captured photographs of crimson flashes, among the rarest celestial events globally, where luminous crimson flashes become visible in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers began their evening to capture the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be lucky to get optimal conditions that evening, but their expedition turned into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member commented.

Upon examining his images for a stellar landscape and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer explained. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced joyful noises and numerous expressions in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, caused by electrical storms. Unlike traditional lightning that strikes downward to the surface, the phenomena ascend towards the higher altitudes, producing shapes that are similar to vertical forms, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The initial image of a red sprite was captured – accidentally – in 1989, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings

They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but one photographer was fortunate. “I happened to be looking directly at one when it occurred – an ideal happenstance looking at the right part of the sky and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.

Witnessing the phenomena was a goal for this individual, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to observe.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Recording a such an event needs a mastery of technical photography, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and innovative thinking, the individual explained. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member commented it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band shining above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light moved above a electrical event at a great distance,” he described.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images showing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you realize you are observing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
