Offspring of Former South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terror Charges as Court Case Starts
The child of former South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of the city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over comments she made on social media four years ago during fatal unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her father.
A seven-day period of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, left at least 300 individuals deceased and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
The defendant has been charged of encouraging this violence and confronts allegations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public violence.
History of the Legal Matter
The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of corruption while he was in power.
She has always refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently claimed the allegations against her were an bid to resolve political scores with her dad after he founded his own political party and campaigned against the ANC.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.
Her legal team has argued that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and does not have compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.
