Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
