LA Dodgers Hold On in Toronto to Set Up Decisive Game 7 in World Series
This year's World Series is going to a final seventh game following the Dodgers kept their repeat dreams intact on Friday with a 3–1 victory over the Blue Jays in Game 6.
The reigning title holders halted Toronto’s late-game comeback with a dramatic final twin killing, stunning a home audience that had arrived prepared to celebrate the team's first title in 32 years.
Game 6 Recap
The Dodgers generated all of their scoring in the third frame. With two outs, Ohtani was purposely passed before Smith hit a two-bagger to left to bring home Edman. Freddie Freeman drew a walk to load the bases, and Betts came through with a two-run single to left, handing the Dodgers a 3–0 lead.
That key hit snapped a postseason slump and rekindled the title holders' hopes of becoming the initial back-to-back World Series winners since the Yankees captured three straight from 1998 to 2000.
Mound Duel
Gausman had been dominant to that stage, fanning six of the first seven batters he confronted. He fanned eight through three frames, tying a Fall Classic mark, but the third-frame rally proved decisive. The Blue Jays' star ended with 8 Ks over six innings, allowing three runs on three safeties and two walks.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, meanwhile, was steady again under pressure. The 27-year-old right-hander outdueled Gausman for the second occasion in a week, giving up one run on five base hits over six innings with six strikeouts. He boosted his record to four wins and one loss this postseason with a 1.56 ERA.
The lone score against him resulted from George Springer two-out single in the third inning, scoring Addison Barger, who had doubled previously in the frame. Springer’s hit provided a brief spark in his comeback to the starting nine after missing a pair of contests with an oblique injury.
Bullpen Heroics
From there, the Dodgers’ bullpen took over. First-year pitcher Wrobleski escaped a jam in the seventh inning, and fellow rookie Sasaki worked into the ninth before hitting Alejandro Kirk to start the frame. Addison Barger followed with a two-base hit that got stuck under the left-center-field fence, forcing runners to stay at second and third base.
Glasnow, the Dodgers' Game 3 starting pitcher, came on in relief and induced a pop fly before Giménez hit a line drive to left field. Enrique Hernández caught the ball and threw to second to retire Barger, clinching the victory and giving Glasnow his first-ever successful save.
Looking Ahead: Seventh Game
The best-of-seven now boils down to one game. Max Scherzer will take the mound for Toronto, becoming the sole active hurler to pitch in multiple World Series Game 7s after doing so in the 2019 season with Washington. The 40-year-old inked a single-season contract to pursue one more title and has been a vocal leader throughout this playoff run.
The Los Angeles squad, looking to become baseball’s first back-to-back title winners in nearly a quarter-century, are expected to rely on Shohei Ohtani for a brief appearance.
