Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Israelis have come together around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the plan.
A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."
"When we see all home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to finish in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"We are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said additional victims had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the south, medics said.
