Transgender filmmaker Sam Feder's recent documentary "Heightened Scrutiny" provides a compelling two-part perspective – simultaneously an emotional portrait of a prominent trans advocate and a pointed analysis of journalistic reporting surrounding trans rights.

Legal Struggle at the Supreme Court

This feature traces ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he gears up for court proceedings in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle happened in December 2024, with the judiciary eventually deciding in favor of Tennessee's case, effectively allowing restrictions on healthcare for transgender minors to stay in effect across numerous US states.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, shared Feder during a discussion. Meanwhile, my earlier film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was a real push. Our intention was to generate discussion so people would learn more about the case.

Personal Narrative Amid Legal Battle

Although Feder offers a thorough examination of how mainstream news organizations have promoted transphobic talking points, the film's greatest achievement may be its captivating depiction of Strangio. Typically a measured lawyer in public settings, Strangio reveals his authenticity throughout the film.

That was a major challenge, to open up parts of my life to a filmmaker that I had strived to keep personal, explained Strangio. Sam explained he wanted future generations to know that we tried, to see what was done in support of these struggles for our material survival.

Varied Perspectives in the Struggle

To strengthen Strangio's narrative, Feder includes various transgender voices, such as well-known figures from journalism and the arts. This production also features viewpoints from cisgender allies who analyze how respected publications have participated to harmful reporting of trans people.

The perspective of trans minors central to the legal case is illustrated through a extraordinary young activist named Mila. Viewers first see her speaking out for her community at a school board meeting, with later footage showing her demonstrating for trans rights outside the Supreme Court.

Intimate Scenes Beyond the Courtroom

Heightened Scrutiny also contains emotional moments where Feder moves beyond the ongoing political struggle, including scenes of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a body art featuring lines from civil rights leader Pauli Murray's poem "Vision."

This ink moment is among my preferred parts in the movie, explained Strangio. Being tattooed is practically like a reflective experience for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are significant to me.

Body Autonomy and Representation

Feder's focus to carefully capturing Strangio getting to his body art underscores that this film is fundamentally about transgender bodies – not just those of young people who face denial of their ability to live truly in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the numerous subjects who are featured in the production.

I create films with a meaning, and part of that is selecting people who are brilliant and concise enough to sustain the camera, explained Feder. When people ask me what they should wear for an filming, my answer is anything that makes you feel attractive. This is essential to me – as transgender individuals, we struggle so much with our self-perception.

Legacy and Optimism

A key aspect that causes Feder's works shine is his evident skill for making his transgender interviewees feel at ease, seen and appreciated. This methodology creates genuine chemistry between Feder and Strangio, helping the director to achieve his objective of presenting Strangio as a complete person and leaving a document for future generations of how persistently he and others have campaigned for transgender rights.

I don't want people to end up in a place of constant hopelessness because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I want to be in a method of using the law to minimize harm, but not to turn it into some sort of conduit for our liberation aspirations. State bodies is not going to be the reflection through which we see ourselves. Our community are that reflection, and it's very crucial that we persist having that discussion together with dialogues about pushing against these regulations and approaches.
