• Officials at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero engaged with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with industry figures participating in almost a quarter of discussions.

• The climate official engaged with oil industry representatives 250 times – with one-third of each discussion attended by corporate delegates.

• Throughout the equivalent duration ministry officials held meetings with trade union representatives 61 times.

• Three prominent oil corporations engaged with representatives 100 times collectively.

• Fossil fuel lobbyists attended nearly all ministerial discussion about the excess profits charge, a short-term levy against the "unprecedented revenues" of North Sea petroleum firms.

Political Reactions

An ecological representative remarked: "Instead of heeding experts, populations suffering from climate events, or parents anxious to secure a safe future for their descendants, this government is favoring lobbyists and earnings for oil and gas giants."

Official Denial

The government insisted the findings were "inaccurate", claiming numerous of the firms mentioned also had renewable energy projects and that these were often the focus of the meetings.

"Our primary objective is a just, systematic and successful change in the marine area in compliance with our climate and legal requirements, and we are collaborating with the field to protect current and future generations of quality employment."

Broader Context

Various prominent oil and gas companies have been censured for reducing their sustainable funding in recent times amid a global pushback against environmental measures.

An advocacy leader from an environmental law organization stated: "Ministers pledged a people-focused leadership, but that doesn't mean yielding to corporations making money out of environmental crisis. It's essential to discontinue preferential treatment of environmental offenders and focus on the public."
